Sometimes those NGOs reach their goals to a certain extent and often they fail to do so due to lack of personnel, funds and a proper organisation. The present availability of housing facilities for the mentally challenged people falls pitifully short of the actual requirement in the nation. The number is far lesser than what was projected a few decades ago, when the seeds of de-institutionalization were sown. It propagated the concept of a more holistic, humane approach towards the mentally ill individuals of the society; instead of segregating them totally from the society and forcing them into isolation, the new idea was to bring them closer to society, educate them in its ways and gradually re integrate them into the mainstream of the population.
